Boyle Transportation holds the highest safety rating issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT). Significant resources are committed to maintaining safe and secure operations.
New professional drivers undergo a comprehensive, on-site, function-specific training.
The company carefully manages inhouse, all aspects of local, national and international registration and compliance. We are focused not simply on safety compliance but on continuous improvement of safety throughout our organization. Responsibility for safety does not rest solely with one individual in our organization. Every employee in the company is responsible and accountable for safety and safety performance is an important aspect of job performance and is reflected in employee reviews and incentive compensation. We also actively advocate for safety in the broader trucking industry by serving on numerous trade and government-industry organizations such as the American Trucking Associations (ATA) and the National Defense Transportation Association (NDTA).
Measuring Safety
One of the best measures of a carrier's safety performance is the percentage of road-side inspections that resulted in "Out-of-Service" status. Much more informative than the DOT Safety Rating, the Out-of-Service rate is an ongoing measure of a fleet's safety. The higher a carrier's Out-of-Service rate is, the more likely your shipment will be improperly handled or will travel in an unsafe vehicle. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) makes this information available for all motor carriers on the Internet at http://www.safersys.org We place great emphasis on our safety performance, especially our performance relative to competitors. Among Department of Defense (DOD) authorized carriers, we have the best performance in several key measures of safety, including the percentage of DOT roadside inspections that resulted in out-of-service condition violations or citations.

Safety starts with the right people, proper procedures and the right training system. From there, we believe in giving our people the best tools to do their job. One of the reasons for our unparalleled safety record is our leadership in safety technology. We have always felt compelled to create as safe an environment as possible for our professional drivers, their families, our customers and the general public. To mitigate the risk of both preventable and non-preventable accidents, we have incorporated accident scenarios and emergency response procedures into our training. We specifically address accident avoidance. We have implemented safety technologies designed to address root causes of accidents such as fatigue, following too closely, excessive speed and poor blind side visibility. We invest more than $15,000 of safety technology in each truck. These technologies include
No technology is a substitute for an alert, experienced and well-trained professional driver practicing proper defensive driving techniques — that is our primary focus. These technologies are merely tools designed to aid the professional driver in providing either increased reaction time or reinforcement of proper driving technique.
Automated Transmissions
All of our over-the-road tractors are equipped with two-pedal automated transmissions
(without a clutch or stick shift). This enables a professional driver to keep two hands on
the wheel, which we consider a safety advantage.
Collision Avoidance Systems
Our trucks are equipped with Eaton VORAD collision avoidance system with
SmartCruise. VORAD uses a forward-looking radar to alert the driver when there is inadequate stopping distance between the truck and objects in its path. VORAD’s side sensor alerts the driver when a vehicle is in its right hand blind spot. When the truck is in cruise control, SmartCruise uses the engine break and automated transmission to automatically gear down the truck if it approaches an object too rapidly.

Roll Stability Control
Integrated with the truck’s anti-lock braking system, “Roll Advisor & Control” first alerts the driver to a potential rollover. If the driver does not take action, the system slows the truck to reduce the risk of an accident. When sensor data indicate that a rollover is imminent, Roll Stability Control sends a signal to reduce engine power, apply the engine brake and/or apply the tractor rear service brake. This slows the truck and reduces the forces pushing the vehicle toward rollover.

Blind-Side Camera Systems
Our trucks are also equipped with the Sidetracker Camera System. This system consists of a video camera mounted on the front right fender, along with a 6” monitor mounted on
the dash. The Sidetracker shows the entire length of a tractor trailer and four lanes of width to the right. It is designed to take the guesswork out of lane changes and blind side
backing.

Lane Departure Warning
The AutoVue™ Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system by Iteris is an important safety and convenience feature that warns drivers if they are drifting out of their lanes. Iteris LDW is programmed to recognize the difference between the road and lane markings. Using image recognition software and algorithms, the computer can predict when a vehicle begins to drift towards an unintended lane change. When this occurs, the unit automatically emits a rumble strip sound via speakers, alerting the driver to make a correction. |
